John C. Lervick
John has handled civil litigation of all types since 1970. He is certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association, and he has represented clients in a broad spectrum of litigation areas, including motor vehicle, insurance, personal injury, municipal, school and business law. John has been the Alexandria City Attorney since 1975 and serves as counsel to Alexandria School District 206.
He has been widely involved in community affairs and has served on the Board of Directors and in Officer positions for the Alexandria Rotary Club, Alexandria Golf Club, Alexandria/Douglas County Developers, and First Lutheran Church. He has served as President of the Douglas County Bar Association. He has chaired the Seventh District Ethics Committee, and he currently serves on the State Board of Professional Responsibility.
A Crosby, North Dakota native, John graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1962. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1967, and graduated from the University of North Dakota Law School (with distinction) in 1970. Gary I. Syverson
Gary joined our firm in 1975. He is certified as a Real Property Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association. In addition to his real estate practice, Gary also handles creditor’s remedies, commercial law, estate planning, and probate matters for clients throughout west-central Minnesota.
Gary is very active in the community, having served on the Board of Directors of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma, the Alexandria Golf Club, Alexandria/Douglas County Developers, the Cardinal Athletic Foundation and Dollars for Scholars.
Originally from Willmar, Minnesota, Gary graduated from Augsburg College in 1972 and from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1975. Gary and his wife, Nancy, have two grown sons.Email Gary Syverson
Derek A. Trosvig
Derek joined our firm in 1993. He focuses on civil litigation, including personal injury matters, workers compensation, social security disability claims and other civil disputes, as well as handling creditor’s remedies and representing clients in family law matters. As an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Alexandria, Derek also handles Alexandria’s municipal prosecutions.
Derek is a Fergus Falls, Minnesota native. He graduated cum laude from Hamline University in 1989, and he received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 1993.
Derek is a member of the Douglas County Bar Association, where he has served as an officer, and the Minnesota State Bar Association. He is admitted to practice law before the Minnesota Federal District Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is widely involved in community affairs as a member of the Alexandria Evening Lions Club, serving as president in ’99–2000. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Cardinal Athletic Foundation and the Alexandria chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Thomas A. Jacobson
Tom joined our firm in May of 1996, after having practiced law in Fargo, North Dakota, since 1990. He handles many types of litigation, including personal injury, insurance, construction, employment and other business related disputes. In addition, he handles business and estate planning matters.
Tom is licensed to practice law in Minnesota, North Dakota and Iowa. He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and he serves on the Board of Directors for Theatre L’Homme Dieu, Young People’s Place, Community Nursery School, and the Alexandria Rotary Club. Originally from Marshall, Minnesota, Tom graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Dakota in 1987 and with honors from Drake University Law School in 1990. He also received a masters degree in mass communications from Drake University in 1990.
Tom is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys Alexandria’s “chain of lakes” with his wife, Joni, and their three sons. Email Thomas Jacobson
Heidi E. Schultz
Heidi joined our firm in 2007 after serving as an Assistant Douglas County Attorney for three years. Heidi handles Alexandria’s municipal criminal prosecutions and other civil disputes.
Heidi began her legal career in Duluth as a law clerk for the Honorable Mark A. Munger. She then served as an Assistant County Attorney in St. Louis, Olmsted and Douglas counties. As an Assistant Douglas County Attorney, Heidi focused on criminal prosecution, with a particular emphasis on juvenile law. She also participated in the 2006–2007 Association of Minnesota Counties Leadership Cohort Program.
Originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Heidi graduated magna cum laude from Valparaiso University School of Law in 2000, where she was a Presidential Law Scholar and was awarded the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award.
Heidi is licensed to practice law in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She is a member of the Douglas County Bar Association, the Minnesota Bar Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and the National District Attorneys Association. She served as the Vice Chair for the Committee on Appeals with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is involved in the Strategic Planning Committee at First Lutheran Church Alexandria. Heidi serves on the Minnesota Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee for the Rules of Criminal Procedure.
Heidi and her husband, Marty, are excited to be members of the Alexandria community and are busy raising their young twins.
Michael J. Cass
Mike started his legal career in the Minneapolis area as a law clerk for the Honorable Stephen C. Aldrich. He then moved into private practice where he focused primarily on estate planning, probate, and guardian/conservator representation.
Originally from South Dakota, Mike graduated magna cum laude from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2007 where he was active as a senior editor for the law review and a student attorney in the law clinic. Prior to law school, Mike attended college at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN graduating with a BA in computer science in 2002.
A recent addition to the Alexandria area, Mike is excited to get involved in the local community. He and his wife Katie are busy raising their daughter and enjoying the lake country.
